How to Get an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for Canada

What is an eTA?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller's passport and is valid for five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Who needs an eTA?

Citizens from select visa-required countries are eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a visitor visa if they are:

  • Travelling to Canada by air
  • Transiting through a Canadian airport on their way to another country
  • Not staying in Canada for more than six months

How to apply for an eTA

You can apply for an eTA online at the Government of Canada's website. The application process is simple and takes about 10 minutes. You will need to provide your passport information, travel plans, and payment information.

Most eTA applications are approved within 72 hours. However, it is important to apply for your eTA well in advance of your travel date, in case there are any delays in processing.

What an eTA will and won't allow you to do

An eTA will allow you to enter Canada by air and stay for up to six months. It does not guarantee you entry into Canada, as the final decision is made by the border services officer at the port of entry.

An eTA will not allow you to work or study in Canada. If you wish to do either of these things, you will need to apply for a work or study permit.
